What if you put the titles of the top 250 movies ever made (according to voters on IMD) in a cloud generator? The could would of course indicate (in a visually pleasant manner) which words were used most often. What does it tell you about the kind of stuff we like to watch? Well, let’s try it!
I’m not interpreting this one for you. But you are welcome to post your interpretations in the comment box.
* This post was inspired by Rob Kozinets’ fascination with word clouds (like the one on the right side of this website) as potential tools for research.

Maybe movies actually need a “story” to come anywhere near the top 250, which kind of rules out porn…

Complex question. Deserves another blog post! My hunch is that it has less to do with expressivity and entertainment value than it has with genre history, top X voter characteristics, genre specific standards of “quality”, etc. There are many love movies (too many for my taste), they just don’t seem to qualify for the “best ever” category. Has little to do with actual “ratings”. For instance, I haven’t seen any porn in the top 250

So why such a difference? Any ideas?
Is it easier to express love in music or is it just not interesting enough to be worth a full 90 minutes?
Wars, murder and kings obviously make good subjects…

You’re right Jerry. There’s actually not a lot of repetition in the titles. Interestingly enough, you won’t find many long titles among the top 250 (there’s a clue!). But still if you compare the cloud to Jb’s top 100 song cloud, the difference is so apparent.

Thanks Pablo. You have a nice thing going on with your blog. It makes me feel sorry I don’t speak Spanish.

Yes! The songs cloud is quite diffetent. Regarding my use of colors: maybe I knew what was coming (night, war, kill, judgement, etc.)…

Domen – on your choice of colours (or rather lack of):
Your picture shows a black and white view of the movies we like to watch… where’s all the colour? Isn’t that what movies are all about? Or have I been watching the “wrong” ones?
