Dear Prof. Bajde,

I'm trying to find copies of 2 of your articles that appeared in the journal "Consumption, Markets & Cultures" -- the 1st is in 9 (4), 2006, pp. 301-16, and the 2nd is in 12 (1), 2009, pp. 65-84. Would it be possible for you to send me copies of those so we can cite you in our work? Thanks in advance for this!

Very funny. In a way this makes me think of microfinance experiments (of the RCT type) where the evidence is in fact collected in situ - an improvement on those studies where "games" were played in order to "prove" microfinance works - but still the collective aspect is ignored. If you study 10 microfinance clients individually who sell mangoes and they all (miraculously) see an increase in their income, you might completely oversee the 10 other mango sellers they replaced on the same street, and whose income went down! You might also mistake the rising incomes of some mango sellers as evidence of "development" or "poverty reduction". Alas, the trouble is, if we leave the clean world of experiments and study the whole picture, we have to deal with messy and contradictory realities... what a drag! ;)

I see your point and largely agree with it. But the 'luxury' I am referring to here isn't necessarily the traditional type of luxury (as defined by high fashion or exclusiveness based on income). The very idea of luxury is currently being redefined (see http://bit.ly/9OkRUh). What I had in mind is the experience of luxury associated with simple products that are not necessarily prohibitively expensive to average consumer (aka the mass). The artisanal trend comes to mind (http://bit.ly/960gz3), as do brands like Haagen-Dazs.

As for retailers, several seem to be trying to pull off premium extensions (e.g., Mercator Premium) – in most cases rather clumsily as you rightly point out.
